This One is Near and Dear To Me

I just finished this little sculpture. I actually made it several months ago, but just last week, I finally finished glazing it. This little piece is very personal to me; it represents myself and my mother, as she lay so very sick with cancer just before her death. I'm not even sure I can sell this piece; I don't believe I can part with it yet, but I wanted to share it with you. I'm wishing you love and happiness this Thanksgiving, and I hope that you are able to spend the holiday with loved ones. Thinking of you~ Kelly

Almost Done!

Yay! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've been working on this piece for over a month now and I am getting quite anxious to get it finished. What I want to do is get this piece to the foundry before I leave for San Francisco on July 11th. (More on that trip later!) I would like to cast this bird girl in bronze and then fire the original clay piece to completion. I really like how she is turning out, and now all I have to do is finish the little bird at the bottom. I've just roughed in that bird, and he needs to be smoothed out and details added. That shouldn't take me too long, once I get in the studio. That is the real challenge for me right now, as hubby has been very busy with his work and the babysitter is out of town, so it's just me and the kiddo all the time. Maybe tonight if I have some energy, I'll head out to the studio. Let me know what you think about the bird girl!

Short Video

So last night, I started playing with a short slideshow of the process of making a sculpture. It turned out okay; mostly I just had fun with the experiment. This sculpture is one of the ones I will be taking to the American Craft Council show coming up in March in Atlanta. I'm really looking forward to the show, as I had such an awesome time at the last ACC show I did (Charlotte, 2008). The slideshow shows me coiling a piece that is part bird-part woman. She's sitting in a birdbath, with a couple of little birdies around her and she is sort of like a mother figure to them. She's watching over them, and trying to teach them about life.
