Finally! Progress on the WIP

Well, I'm spending my Memorial Day in the studio, and I couldn't be happier about it. I haven't gotten much time in the studio over the past week- energy levels have been way low, thanks to the insomnia kicking back in again. But I'm feeling pretty good today and the kiddo is with the babysitter, and so here I am! Yippee! I'm just getting going on the head and neck, but her wings are done, thank goodness. Hopefully I'll have another update this week! Let me know what you think...

Hal's coming to visit!

Yay, later this morning (as it's now 3:13 am), Hal Silverman is coming to visit me! He is a friend of mine who've I known now for 7 years. I can't believe it has been that long! Hal is a great guy and we met at the Piccolo Spoleto Craft show, where I was exhibiting my work. Hal came into my booth, told me that he was a potter and we were off talking and talking and talking! As he described his work, I knew that I had just read an article of his in Clay Times magazine, about how to make these awesome candle lamps. His work is very precise, and so sculptural and you just want to hold one in your hands. Here is a picture of his, but check out his website as well... http://potter-sculptor.com/Quickstart/ImageLib/PA290154_500.JPG This is just one of his simpler forms, but they have such a wonderful tactile quality to them. So once I figured out who this guy was, we definitely had plenty to talk about. He ended up buying one of my pieces, and later on, I bought one of his! His piece has a place of honor in my bedroom, now... So Hal lives up north, and is traveling down with his lovely wife to see some family in Florida. They are kind enough to make a pit stop in Charleston and make the trek out to Folly Beach to see me! I'm excited - it's so fun to talk to another clay person, and we have other things in common, like birding. Hal and Irene (his wife), went to Costa Rica in January and hopefully they will bring me some pictures as some eye candy for me. In other news, I took the munchkin to a birthday party yesterday, and boy,did we have a blast. They gave out those "ring lollipops" to the kids and Marley got all kinds of sticky in the car on the way home. Check out that look of love for her lollipop that she's holding out to me. I don't think I'll ever get all the stickiness off of that car seat...

My New Peeps

So I've just finished some new little Peeps and I wanted to post them. I also just recently downloaded the Camerabag app to the iPhone, and as you can see, I'm having fun with it! So this is the fisheye lens filter... And now here's the original:

Which, of course, shows more of the finished pieces. I just love these little peeps though; making them is an enjoyable process. Hope everyone is having a nice Monday! - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

More Art Journaling

Okay, since you guys were so nice about my other journal posting, I decided to post this one as well. This is the genesis for the current sculpture I'm working on. If you check back a couple of posts, you'll see the work on progress on this piece. I may still add some things to this journal page, but I felt like it was far enough along that I could share it. The idea for this page in the journal came from a trip to GA to visit my family. I was traveling with just myself and my daughter, staying in a hotel room, and feeling a bit vunerable. I started thinking of things that I protect... What do you protect?? - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Art Journaling

I've recently started doing "art journaling" which for me is a perfect fit. I love color so much, and I enjoy doodling, and this is a more creative way to keep a journal. I'm playing with lots of different techniques and color combos, and having SO much fun. I wanted to share this one page with you all...

Detail of WIP

Here's the pic I promised of my work in progress. It's the little birdie between her breasts. Remember that there is still SO much work to do...

WIP update

I've been working on the sculpture, but I've hit a phase that is going to require some time. I knew the wings would take me a while to get it right, because I didn't have a clear picture in my head of what they would look like exactly. My plan was to always just play with them, changing the shape, until they said what I wanted them to say. I have attached the little bird between her breasts, but that little guy may need some tweaking too. I am really just trying to get the whole form basically shaped, and then I will go back and rework or tweak the whole thing. I'll get you a photo today, while I'm working in the studio. We have a babysitter today!! Yay!

Work in Progress

Here's a couple of pics, one is the inside of the base, showing the internal supports I've built in. The other photo is a quick sketch of the piece I'm making, so you can get an idea of where this is heading.

By the way, I use a large door painted with chalkboard paint for my full scale sketching. I love it! I would highly recommend it to any artists you know, or even kids too!

Sculpture-Portrait.com

Hi Guys, I wanted to share with you an online forum that I just recently joined. It's called portrait-sculpture.com and it is just wonderful. These folks are friendly, talented, and generous with their knowledge and support. While I don't really do portrait sculpture, I am interested in capturing a likeness of a person and being able to capture a certain expression. Besides, we are all working in the same medium, so there are many things that are similar. I have already learned so much just from reading the posts and if you have any interest, head on over there and check it out. www.portrait-sculpture.com There are demo videos, lots of pictures, critiques, announcements, and helpful tips. Those guys rock!

Starting a New Piece

Hi everyone! It's not a very exciting photo, but this is the beginning of a new sculpture. This will be her base. I'll post more photos of the work in progress as I go. Sorry for the short post- the kiddo is crying to get out of her crib!
