Journal Page

I've been working in my sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project and I've wanted to share a page with you. I've been playing with drawing girls' faces a bit and I always love my stamps. The other material I've found I love are the Caran D'Ache watercolor crayons - they are the best! I am so glad I brought those with me to San Francisco. They travel well, and are nice and clean to work with.

So, in this journal page, I was thinking big picture things: life and dreams. I like how her face turned out, but I do think it's interesting that most of my girls in my artwork look you in the eye. Maybe it's the whole "eyes are the window to the soul" thing??? The actual page has a much more buttery color to it, rather than a bluish tint on her face. The iPhone camera is pretty good, but there are some limitations to it, I guess.

In other news, I tried to go to a super cool gallery today (SculptureSite) and they weren't open. Darn! They are in the middle of moving their location and lots of things were in crates. I was still able to window-shop some of the pieces, but I was pretty disappointed. That was one place I REALLY wanted to go. So we went to the Merrell store to look for shoes instead. :) Check out the link for the gallery if you are curious...

Hope you are having a great week so far!

  7. wow. this is an amazing image, so much depth and soul. i so resonate with what you've written about balancing life and dreams. presence is such a tender thing. i recently listened to an audio by thich nhat hanh (True Love) and he talks about this so beautifully. I can't listen to it without opening right up and shedding a tear or two - that's what happens in the presence of light and truth. i find i hold my breath just a little - because in the presence of such beauty it takes my breath away. that's what your paintings do. wow. thank you for sharing the deeper parts of yourself.

  18. Kelly,
Thanks for coming by. It is nice to work in a "neat" space, but for me that won't happen... at least not while I am working. I think my husband is going to move all his computer stuff to another room and then I will get it all to myself! Well, except for the two cats that seem to want to be in the middle of things most of the time.

  20. This is stunning and can’t imagine why you would be shy about sharing it!
I purchased the paper for rebinding my sketch book and watched the you tube links you posted. How exciting and scary!!! Did you use her format with the fold out pages? How many pages did you end up putting in? Did you reuse the cover at all or just make a whole new book? Did you use waxed thread?
Sorry to bombard you with questions – I guess I should just be brave and jump in and get moving on it…..

  21. Hey Kylie,
No worries about asking questions! I'm glad I can help! I also had help from other artists, so I am happy to spread the love.
I did use Teesha Moore's technique for cutting the pages and rebinding them. I ended up using 10 sheets, which folded in half, gave me 20 pages. And then some of them have that three fold thing that Teesha shows. I reused the cover, waxed thread and a bookbinding needle to re-sew it back together. I made new holes in the existing cover with an awl. I did 5 holes and then sewed it back together. It's not perfect, but it is WAY better than that thin paper from before. The sketchbook isn't as flat as it was before, but that is okay by me. I'm not shooting for perfection. Oh, and I didn't bother with rounding off the corners!
One other tip, because I used so many pages (10) in the inside 4 or 5 had to be a tad more narrow to fit inside the book. You'll see what I mean once you get all your pages folded and place them inside the cover (without sewing them in) and you will notice that the inner pages stick out a tad further than the rest. I trimmed those off a bit to make them fit better.
Hope this helps and doesn't scare you! It was really fun and really easy and just go for it! I'll be out of touch this weekend (no cell, no internet), but if you have questions, I'll be home Sunday night!
    Good Luck! :)
